G'day everyone,...

I notice it says RB grease, RB= Roller bearing grease.
Will have to see about getting some, also will have to clean out those pots first as whats in there has gone hard and dried out over the years,...

I will heat up the new grease before I put it in so it runs all the way through as much as it can before I start it again.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Can you get your hands on a syringe?  In my part of the planet it is easy enough to go to the local farm & ranch supply store to get 'animal' medications as well as syringes.

Get a suitable size syringe, if it needs the hole enlarged just snip it to size.  With the plunger all the way in you can fill the syringe with grease from a grease gun really easy by pushing the syringe into the grease gun fitting and pumping it full until the plunger is pushed out to its maximum range.

Now with a syringe filled with grease it will be easy to heat the grease.  The syringe should make it easy to pump the grease into the fitting with force.

I'd start by using a solvent like acetone to clean out the old grease then chase that out with compressed air.

G'day everyone,...

I was just going to use an ear-bud to scoop out what little dried up grease is still there as that will leave it clean and then re-fill with warmed up grease as it will flow into the pot.
As you can see the pots are not that big so a spoon of grease will be enough for both pots.

I can just heat it in the spoon over a candle.

At least that was what I was thinking....

G'day everyone,...

Yes it runs perfect still,...

Its just that what little is left has dried out as bro n law never ever serviced it when he had it.

That tells me it can run for a considerable amount of time without needing attention.

Says something about how things were designed and built back then!

My bro n law also bought a lathe new,.. he never serviced that once while he had it,.... when he moved out and had to shift his tools (all payed for by my sister mind you),.. that lathe's oiling pots were all but dry.

Sounds like it will be fine - just grease them and go.

G'day everyone,...

The contacts on the main switch are copper.

I will clean those as well as anything else I can while I am in there,....

I am really surprised at how clean and the lack of corrosion there is in the unit.

I intend to keep it running for as long as I can and the way my father taught me to look after things it should last long after the zombie apocalypse has been and gone!

Oh and this weekend just gone I did the 790,000klm service on the 4x4!

Ok,  now for that cup O tea,....

G'day everyone,..

Ok, this morning on the way into work I stopped and picked up some roller bearing grease,...

Also I picked up a 300ml oil can, the type that has a pump you pump with your thumb.
There was a 150ml oil can for $4.00 or the 300ml can for $5.00.
What do think was the better value?

Funny as our maintenance crew helped me fix a flat tire on my silverado yesterday [cut in sidewall we plugged]. It was mentioned that with all the machinery at the millwork shop adjacent to my new depot. there is not a single grease gun. Yet all day they run jointers ,planers , moulding cutters, prehung door machines etc. Probably a 750 thousand $ a day in income operation for the company! When I ran heavy equiptmentevery thing got greased every morning before work started. Kind of sickening no?

G'day everyone,..

Yeah its kind of sickening how the basics go out the window,....
Simple preventative maintenance dropped for a 'I'll do it later, or Tomorrow' attitude!

Well dang it - hook up the power and let us see what you get!

I remember reading that the earliest grease was actually petroleum jelly.  We think of petroleum jelly as a nearly clear topical ointment but it was first a byproduct of drilling oil and naturally black in color.  So if you have something from the turn of the century that required 'grease' you can use Vaseline on it.

When I was growing up my dad moonlighted stuccoing houses on the weekends and each of my siblings and I helped him as we grew up.  The stucco mixer had a couple of oil ports for lubrication.  These ports had a spring loaded flip-open cap to keep them covered.  I remember filling them with heavy oil over and over - just watching the oil vanish.  It never came out anyplace!  We figured the oil must be running through the bearing then seeping within the framework because there was no external sign of oil seepage.  One day we just stuffed the grease gun into the port and pumped half a tube of grease into it before we seen the grease coming out around the shaft.  The bearings never made noise or showed any sign of wearing out but it bothered me that the lubrication just ran through them and vanished.
