Mission Friday, 21 April.

Bud.

Actually, one of the finest men I've ever had the honor to know.

M/Sgt. Cephus C. Melton .... C-Man.
A brother from another mother.
71 years young and the reason I know about the PGR.

First time hangin' out was well before I moved down here - already in the group I found myself part of somehow and it's still goin' 'n growin'.

'Nam and more.  A lot more.

No patience for idiots and sloths.  None.

But always..... always..... everybody mattered.

Except evil.

And sometimes the Dolphins.    :p     Damn, we used to yell at the TV's in the bar a whole lot.

So not an official PGR mission but a DOD request. Right now some Army rangers are on a , Ride, Run, Ruck as they are calling it. From Montauk Point to the West Sayville, N.Y. &-11. About 75miles in under 10 hours. Several Long Island 7-11's are sponsoring the effort. LEO are assisting through out. We have been asked to greet the soldiers at the sponsoring 7-11's. The 7-11 nearest my home [less than a 1/2 mile] is a sponsor. Piggie and I will be there to greet the soldiers and patronize and thank the owners of that franchise.
This is to raise funds and awareness of PTSS. 22 a day that needs to stop our vets deserve help dealing with the experiences of trauma due to their war zone and combat service. Remember the N.Y.C. Long Island has the greatest concentration of veterans nation wide. Our Calverton National Cemetary is the largest and busiest in the world. Averaging 63 interments a day.

Escort went well. My mission was lead and secure for 13 miles. Watching progress and guarding from idiots in cars. Those Airborne guys are some fantastic Americans. The runners are asking me if I need water or fresh fruit at the stops. Hell I had the easy job. They insisted I and Pete take a tee shirt the were selling. And the wives refused any donations of cash. Remember this is for PTSS treatment and awareness . They all said we were now part of the family and paid by being there for their safety.
My local 7-11 owner was a sponsor so I picked them up right by home. Sanjay is from India and came here as a teen with his parents. He got citizenship and is as American as we are here. 7-11 corporate public relations lady told me at the next stop, she is filming [snap shots] the whole event. Sanjay wants me to go see him and give him e-mail info so he can forward the photos to me.

2 more missions completed today. We put flags out at Calverton National Cem. this morning.
Only thing is opposite normal keep off grass with vehicles today is must park on grass due to the volume of vehicles. We with an Am Vets group have a smaller section. 15 minutes and we did our service. Back to parking on grass. It has rained all week the grass is wet. 2 of our riders upon leaving went down. Jerry and his triumph spun a bit and the rear kicked out but he saved it doing a split. I had already gone by then on Piggie. Others helped him get square and off. The Ken with wife Karen On their Yamaha cruiser [ almost a bagger with trunk, hard bags , fairing , radio, phone tooth thing etc. So heavy for a yamahamer. Again broke traction and went down. Was told Karen got off safely and quickly. Her husband got stuck under the scoot and fractured his foot I heard. Both these guys can ride circles around me in every way. Both are 'Nam combat vets too!
This afternoon we stood for 'Nam vet Cpt. Yun U.S. Army. Monday we do the Memorial Day ceremony at CNC.

Waiting to see if Nat. Cem. service is cancelled or not. Several parades have been cancelled. Very wet here and may still get lightning added to our rain.

That was..... different.

A celebration of life is a very mild way to put it ; this is a seriously close family - truly alive and loving every second.

Honest:  The only thing missing at the service was a full bar.

The Coasties detachment was in dress blues, of course.  We were in the usual PGR mode.

The family and friends - everyone..... Guy Harvey t-shirts, shorts/jeans, flips/deck shoes/sneakers.

Willie Nelson, Frank Sinatra and more playing on the audio system.

Massive slide show/video playing on a couple of TV's.

The preacher - a life-long family friend - dude told a few truly hysterical stories of moments together that had deep meaning in the end.

Five hour guard standing with "Mr. Vinny" - half-hour shifts at both sides of the casket - nobody wanted to be relieved.

My back and knees were 'not happy' afterwards - but without any hesitation whatsover, I'll do it all over again in less than a nano-micro-second.

My So. Fla. Brothers and Sisters were in my thoughts as I helped remove the flags at Calverton Nat. Cem. this morning. Good work Kenny. Worth the pain too.

Specialist Matthew E Baylis had a bridge dedicated to his memory here today. In 2007 the 20 year old U.S. Army soldier gave his life if Iraq during a fire fight. We had about 100 bikes plus cages today to honor his memory. The Suffolk County Police shut down state road 27 A.K.A. Sunrise Hwy. so we could escort the family under the bridge as the signage was uncovered.

Lcpl Jordan Haerter USMC laid down his life in Iraq 2005. His Mom is a coworker. Today would have been his 29th birthday. Today was the inaugural Jordan haerter 5K to raise $ for helping several veterans organizations and support groups. The turnout was impressive PGR patrolled the east end of the Jordan Haerter Memorial Bridge While the Red Knights MC controlled the west end. Well they sort of did from now on I believe PGR will cover the entire bridge traffic detail. This is in Sag Harbor, N.Y. a very old whaling town where he lived. The Hampton Bays chapter American Legion Riders posted at his gravesite an honor guard.
It was his first full day in country and the other Lcpl USMC Lcpl Yale was on his last duty assignment. Was to board the freedom bird home early the next morning. They are being reviewed for MOH. Originally did not get put up for it because no American service member witnessed their bravery. But it has shown up on a salvaged hard drive from the fire support base.
I heard somewhere in the vicinity of $35,000 was raised this morning.
